I talked to the folks today -- apparently funding hasn't been received yet.
Then after that, they have to figure out if anybody else in ITG wants to
have a hand in the project. THEN after that, if there's any money left, I
might come aboard.

I wish there wasn't all this beauracracy...but I suppose the whole UT
experience prepares you for stuff like this. What's interesting about the
job is that it involves genetic algorithms, so I'm kind of at home with that.

When I mentioned I had a background in genetics, and there's a good chance
I'll be going to grad school for that stuff, one of 'em said that genetic
algorithms didn't have all that much to do with biology. But the paper they
gave me seems to borrow genetic concepts like meitotic crossing-over and
point-mutations; the only difference I saw was that their version was a lot
simpler :-)

So if I get any word I'll let you know. Something that should help is that
the project leader, Sara Matzner, really enjoys jazz, and said she'd come
out to see me play some Tuesday at Cedar Street. Funny how the non-job
related things become important.

Speaking of non-work stuff, are you planning on doing a tv special again?
Establishing your own personal media empire can be fun!

Q: How has the response been to ganymede thus far? Are people happy with
it? Some of the people I talked to in ITG were surprised that such a large
project was being undertaken in java (as opposed to that gnarly C++ they
seem so keen on).

Talk to you soon,
Erik
